Ajaria Visit: 2015-9
2015-11-08 - Ajaria is an autonomous region in Georgia adjacent to the Turkish border and was established to grant special minority rights to the ethnic Georgian Muslims settling in this area (nowadays making up approximately 30% of Ajaria\\\'s population in an otherwise predominantly Christian country). We visited Batumi, the capital of the region and one of the major Black Sea ports as well as an important tourism destination. We went there with a marshrutka minibus from the Georgian seaside resort Ureki (the fare was 4 Lari per person, approximately 1.50 Euros), but Batumi can also be reached conveniently by train (e.g., from Tbilisi). The marshrutka dropped us off close to the old town, but for the way back we had to get to the central bus station, which is a bit outside the city centre. Finding the right marshrutka back was not that easy since the destinations of the minibuses are only indicated in Georgian letters, but we asked one of the drivers and he showed us where to go. We perceived the people in the Caucasus region in general as extremely hospitable, friendly and helpful towards foreign tourists. Speaking a bit Russian is not necessarily required, but definitely helps to make communication easier.

Busingen Visit: 2014-3
2015-11-08 - Büsingen am Hochrhein is a small German enclave entirely surrounded by Swiss territory. The fact that most of the inhabitants of Büsingen work in Switzerland causes certain peculiarities with regard to customs and taxes (Büsingen is part of the Swiss customs area) and communication (Büsingen has both a Swiss and a German postal code and telephone prefix). The Swiss Franc is the most commonly used currency, although Euros may be accepted as well. We were at a wedding near Lake Constance and spent one night in Büsingen at a friend\\\'s in-laws. We arrived by car from the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The route across Swiss territory does not involve motorways so that no vignette road tax has to be paid. In Büsingen itself there is not much to see, you can make a nice walk along the Rhine river and during the summer going swimming and boating may be nice things to do. The Swiss town of Schaffhausen as well as the famous Rhine Falls are situated just across the border and are worth a visit.

Moldova (other) Visit: 2005-5
2015-11-08 - Small Eastern European country with hospitable people and excellent wine. We got in by bus from Brașov (Romania) and left the country four days later with another bus to Bucharest. We visited friends and stayed for the most part in Chișinău, a rather green city with lots of parks and some interesting sights (Nativity Cathedral, Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard...). Moreover, we made an excursion to Căpriana monastery (approximately 45 minutes by minibus). This was an extremely rewarding experience, in particular since it was on a Sunday so we were able to mix among the regular worshippers and listen to the male members of the parish performing the liturgical chants of the Orthodox tradition. We did not have time to go to the famous Cricova wine cellars, though, but maybe next time... Although it might be easier nowadays to communicate in English than ten years ago, we found it very useful to have at least some basic proficiency in Romanian and/or Russian.

Sovereign Base Areas (Cyprus) Visit: 2015-4
2015-11-07 - The British Sovereign Base Area consists of the two separate entities Akrotiri (south of Limassol) and Dhekelia (northeast of Larnaka adjacent to the United Nations Buffer Zone). By the time of our visit both territories were easily accessible (except for the military installations, of course!!!), although we visited only Akrotiri. We went there by rental car and visited the archeological site of Koúrion, which is situated entirely within the base area. With its ancient theater and several excavated houses with beatiful mosaics it is definitely worth a visit, although maybe not as spectacular as the excavations in Páfos. Next to the archeological site there is a beautiful beach (Koúrion Beach), which was red-flagged on the day of our visit due to rather strong wind and heavy sea. Instead we went to Lady\'s Mile Beach at the other side of the base area (drive past the salt lake!), which was very nice as well.
