I began my international travel when I was 17 when I first went to Europe. That year, I also created a list of 50 things I wanted to accomplish in my lifetime. One was to visit all 50 states, which I completed in 1995 when I got my 50th, Alaska, when I was 43. Another goal is to visit 100 " actual " countries. I am currently at 62 and hope to reach my goal when I am 65. Travel has taught me, my wife and daughter a lot about people and cultures. For example, we went to Egypt and Jordan in December of 2001, 3 months after 9/11, much to the chagrin of friends and family. It remains one of the most wonderful trips we have taken. Our trip to Burma (Myanmar) in 2004 was another eye-opener. Here is a society which has been oppressed for hundreds of years, yet the people were the warmest and most friendly we have encountered anywhere- even topping the friendly kiwis of New Zealand !! We also make so many acquaintances both from the countries we visit and Americans we run into while traveling that we continue to keep in touch with on our return. We have recommended guides we have used in Egypt and Burma to other friends, so the travel loop continues its wonderful cycle.
