My travels began at 2 with a trip to the end of the block. My Mother caught me and I had a long wait until my next adventure.
Now that I am retired I can indulge my passion without fear of being caught. In 2005 my daughter and I backpacked around the world for three months. We took the slow boat down the Mekong to Luang Phrabang; enjoyed the Himalayas from Gangtok and Darjeeling; strolled the ghats at Varanasi; marvelled at the Taj, Agha Sophia and Ephesus; collected beach stones on Samos and parted, still friends, in Delphi. What a wonderful adventure!
In 2006 I went from Ireland to Cyprus, crossing the Med by ferry and spending a month in the Adriatic. In 2007 I took my first cruise around the Caribbean then spent time in the Caucasus, Balkans, Morocco and the islands of the Atlantic.
In 2008 my daughter and I traced Jonathan Harker's trip to Romania and went down the Nile. Summer found me in Sweden with my girlfriend, then more time in the Caribbean. In 2009 it was Sweden and the Baltics.
2011 found me in Jamaica, at Fort Jefferson, across the Caribbean and my first real venture into South America.
I'm currently waiting to cast off for the islands of the SOuth Pacific. Next? Who knows. As Sir Richard Burton once said - "The Devil Drives."
My Favorite Places:
Still searching. But my trip in 2006 definitely added the Isle of Man, Bonifacio, Monreale, Valetta, Mostar and Albania to a long list. I'll never forget Afghanistan in October 1970; South Island tramps, hitching down the ALCAN; Copan and Tikal; Prague and Istanbul; the Royal in Tangier, 1966; Marrakech with "The Swede", reading "Dracula" with my daughter as we toured Romania and visiting the sites of Egypt with her. And favorite places come with favorite friends - Sophie & Patrick, Fred & Kelley on and under the waters of Saba, the New Zealand crew.
