I have lived overseas for a total of 33 years since 1971: Cairo, Egypt (30 years: 1971-1972, 1973-1974, and 1985-2013); Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (4 years: 1981-1985); and London, England (1 year: 1974-1975). I began traveling abroad during my junior year abroad at The American University in Cairo in 1971-1972. Initially I measured my travel against the list of United Nations member states. Then in 1987 I decided to adopt the Travelers Century Club list. At that time I had already visited some 185 TCC destinations. By the end of 1997 I still had only 203 TCC destinations under my belt. However, in less than five years -- between early 1998 and late 2002 -- I visited a total of 97 new TCC destinations. Pitcairn Island was my 300th TCC destination in November 2002. As of October 2014 I have visited 320 TCC destinations and am missing only the Antarctic territories of France, Australia, New Zealand and Norway.
My Favorite Places:
My stock answer is, "Anywhere the next cruise ship is going!"
My real answer is Pitcairn Island (2000, 2002, 2003, 2015), Norfolk Island (2000, 2002, 2010), and Tristan da Cunha (2003, 2004). Incidentally, the photo above was taken during a sailaway from Tristan da Cunha in December 2003 and the photo below was taken during a sailaway from Pitcairn in February 2003.
