I grew up in Tennessee and caught the tavel bug early by going on road trips throughout the United States with my dad and siblings. My first trip abroad was to the Bahama Islands at the age off 15. Other opportunities for international travel came slowly until I was in my late 30s, and was writing a syndicated newspaper column on politics and religion, which opened several doors for travel. Today, semi-retired, I travel as much as time and money permit, just for fun.
I have lived in 11 different states in almost every part of the USA, and have visited all 50 states. Although my ultimate travel desire is to visit every place on earth, personal realities may make that impossible. However, I decided years ago that if I can't reach every country, I can at least get to know my own country very well. Therefore, On September 2, 2013, I completed a 17 year quest to visit each of the 3,142 counties or county equivalents (Parishes, Independent Cities, Alaskan Boroughs and unorganized census areas in the United States.
My favorite travel companion is my beautiful and adventurous wife, Karen.
My Favorite Places:
In my thinking, every place on earth falls into either one of two categories. First, are the places I have not yet visited but would love to see. Second, are the places I have been and would like to return and explore more thoroughly. My favorites are those in the first category. My two favorite things in life are 1.Embarking on a trip, and 2. Returning home again.
