Like many of the members of Most Traveled People, my travelling started at an early age.
Both my mother and father served in the Royal Navy and at 4 years old I was travelling to different countries.
In 1968 at the age of 10, my parents allowed me to be educated at sea onboard the S.S. (School Ship) Uganda taking in countries on the Iberian penninusla, the Meditteranean and North Africa.
Through my senior school, my father would take me on camping expeditions across Europe and down into former Yugoslavia.
At 16 I left school to join the Navy, 3 years service taking in 19 countries, 3 island nations, 2 territories and 5 states, serving in Europe, Africa, Scandinavia, Caribbean, North America, Arctic region, Middle East, Far East, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean. After this at the age of 19, I realised that travelling for me was the ultimate adventure.
A few years later, I served with a reserve unit of the Royal Marines, again I travelled to countries with them.
In 1995 I met my Canadian wife Catharine onboard a Russian ice-breaker bound for Antarctica. We now live for six months of the year in both England and Canada.
I qualified for the Travelers Centrury Club back in 1988. In 1992, I was elected a Life Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. And I have been with M.T.P. from the early days.
I have been to every continent and sub-continent and sailed in every ocean. I recently completed a solo 3rd World Tour taking in many more countries, island nations, provinces, states and territories.
My first world circumnavigation was back in 1987 with a close friend who is a paraplegic adventurer; we overcame many obstacles together on that tour.
2016, five year update; I am now retired from 30 years of British Government and Local Government employment, the past 20 years was in the Tourism sector. I am still travelling extensively, also giving talks on my travels to schools, colleges, military associations and other societies in the public sector. I have recently returned again from Russia and the Caucasus region, Iraq, Iran and Kurdistan.
October 2016, I am heading back out to Central and West Africa....
