Aland Islands Visit: 2007-9
2013-01-14 - On 22 September 2007 we went by plane from Lübeck to Skavsta airport south of Stockholm in Sweden. After a short night in Stockholm we took the ferry early next morning to Mariehamn in the Åland Islands. The route of the ferry was very impressing during the first part of the voyage. During the second part we enjoyed Finnish Oktoberfest on board with a crazy Finnish band in Bavarian style - pretty weird!
The next one and half days we explored Mariehamn, the small, but nice capital of the Åland Islands. Unfortunately the «Pommern» vessel was not open for visitors. But walking in and around Mariehamn was enjoyable, though.

Austria Visit: 2010-8
2007-09-28 - Austria was the first foreign country I ever visited. Back in January 1982 we made a skiing trip organized by our school. We spent ten days somewhere in the mountains in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.
In 1993 we stayed three days in Wien (Vienna).
In December 2008 we had one day in Wien (Vienna) and one day in Salzburg.
In August 2010 we had a whole week in Wien (Vienna). Enough time to see many of the wonderful sights there. I also went to the border of the micro-nation Republic of Kugelmugel, but it was impossible to cross that border.

Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Visit: 2012-9
2007-09-28 - On 6 June 1993 we went there by car from Dubrovnik to make a visit in Medugorje. At that time this area was de facto the Croatian Republic Herceg-Bosna, de jure it was Bosnia-Hercegovina. Stayed there for one afternoon and was surprised to see busses full of tourists. At the border they refused to stamp our passports claiming both sides of the border to be Croatian territory...
In August 2012 we spent our main holidays in Bosnia-Hercegovina. In 18 days we visited Sarajevo, Tuzla, Brčko, Zvornik, Banja Luka, Prijedor, Pale, Zenica, Jajce, Mostar, Konjic and Trebinje. The country is full of interesting places and stories. Among the odd things to do there is a visit to the oldest public toilet in Europe. It can be found in the old town of Sarajevo near the Gazi Huzrev Mosque.

Flemish Region Visit: 2007-10
2013-01-14 - While being in Gent in Belgium, we made a day-trip to Baarle-Hertog / Baarle-Nassau on 9 October 2007. Went by train to Turnhout and from there by bus to Baarle-Hertog. It is a nice little village, but it has nothing special, except the fact, that it is full of borders. Some of them are clearly marked on the streets and pavements. It is a nice trip for a relaxing day. In the village there are a few cafes and restaurants, even opportunities to buy some souvenirs.

Gagauzia Visit: 2011-9

Malta Visit: 2004-9
2013-01-14 - In 2004 we made a last minute holiday in Malta. One week of sun and relaxation. We stayed in a small hotel in Marsascala and went all around Malta and Gozo by bus. There is a lot of historic sights in Malta. As the island is small most places can be reached easily and you can walk a lot and just enjoy.

Republic of Georgia (other) Visit: 1995-5
2007-08-20 - We were visiting friends in Tbilisi. Travelled along with my Georgian friends to Mtskheta, Gori and up into the mountains north of Tbilisi. Stayed there for eight days and was deeply impressed by the hospitality of the Georgian people.

Vatican City Visit: 1993-5
2013-01-14 - While being in Rome at the end of May 1993 we were zapping through the TV in our hotel room and found some Vatican program. But broadcast just ended and they only showed a notice, that the pope (John Paul II.) will held a mass the following day in Saint Peter\'s Square. As we were not far from it, we decided to go there and found Saint Peter\'s Square with fences and it required tickets to get inside. We had no tickets and did not want to buy any, so we were just walking around a few meters from the fence, until suddenly a nun came to us and asked, if we like to get free tickets. For free it was o.k. So we got inside and saw the pope. Later that day we had the opportunity to see the main touristic spots of the Vatican City State. From the roof of Saint Peter\'s Basilica we had a wonderful view and on the roof was a souvenir shop.
