Cayman Islands Visit: 2009-6
2009-06-25 - We, I and Mauri, my husband, enjoyed visiting the Grand Cayman and staying in the impressive Westin Casuarina Resort & Spa hotel, located just beside seashore. We loved to walk several miles barefoot along the white sanded shoreline of the Seven Mile Beach. Soft sand moving back and forth in the cycles of waves rubbed gently our feet, thus causing a very relaxed feeling afterwards. We spotted at some point of our walk a famous landmark that I remember to have seen also in the Finnish TV. The many hotels of the island is a sightseeing in itself, but the architecture of the Ritz Carlton with its functionalist and Roman time style impressed me. Georgetown, the capital of the Cayman Islands, is a beautiful small town with its many beautifully decorated buildings around the harbour area. We enjoyed stopping in the Paradise restaurant and watching a gigantic cruise ship anchoring at a further distance. We were proud to identify this ship to be of Finnish-Norwegian origin, built in the Masa Yards dock in Finland.Georgetown impressed me also with pirate styled statues and a joyful Tortuga statue. The many colourful sign “trees”, giving information about directions and shops, are an eye-catching feature of the city.

Jamaica Visit: 2009-6
2009-06-25 - Greetings from Kingston, Jamaica. We study here Jamaican sprint history and philosophy. We have learned e.g. that “Sports leads away from poverty!” and “The starting point of all achievement is desire. Keep this constantly in mind. Weak desires bring weak results, just as a small amount of fire makes a small amount of heat” (Napolean Hill) and “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work” (Aristotle). The highlight of our trip was Usain Bolt, who very friendly and politely shared his time with us.

Tibet Visit: 2006-6
2007-07-16 - The King Cypress

A small village called Bajie, close to the City of Nyingchi is famous for its forest of 900 giant cypress trees. The mean height of these trees is 44 meters and mean diameter 1,5 meters. Professor Qi-Bin Zhang from the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, explains this forest to be a relict forest originating to the period about 4600 years ago, when today almost treeless Southern Tibet Uplands was coverered by a dense forest. Why did the forest disappear that time? Was it climate change? No, just grazing and forest cutting!

A crooked path leads to the roots of the most magnificent tree in China : King of Cypress. My first encounter with this six meters thick, 50 meters high tree and 2600 years old tree is gorgeous!

King of Cypress, declared holy, is believed to be Shinrab Miba’s life tree. Miba was establisher of Lama Buddhism. I honour this tree so much that I am even afraid to hug it! Well, hugging would be difficult in any case, because its circumference, 18 m, exceeds over tenfold my fathom!

Juniperus communis, our home juniper species in Finland , belongs to the same family as Tibetan cypress. Finnish juniper, however, looks a dwarf in size compared to its Tibetan cousin. But talking in terms of range distribution (most widely spread conifer species in the world) and age (1100 years), there is no reason why it should not be included in this “royal” cypress family.
