Sovereign Military Order of Malta Visit: 2007-6
2008-03-16 - This is getting a bit silly. I just visited Rome, mainly to see the Colosseum and the Vatican City. Being a member of MTP and slightly manic about the number of places I have visited, I knew there was another entity in the city, the SMOM. So I located the Via Condotti no 68, their Magistral Office, the adress(?) granted extraterrestriality by Italy. (Pleased to know I was not the only extraterrestrial in town) The door was open, and so was the gate inside. I walked right into the backyard, greeting the smartly dressed man who went into the office on the right, probably the reception. -So now I have visited the Sovereign Military order of Malta? I asked him. -No, not visited, he said. But I was there, cleverly proven by the mirror image of my face in the brass plate on the door. And that is all that counts.

Svalbard Visit: 1998-8
2008-03-16 - Svalbard is the place where I grew up. I arrived by boat in late July 1965, only two months old. I stayed, with the exception of 1970-73, until 1983, when I sold my snowmobile and headed for the normalcy of the Norwegian mainland. Snowmobiles were my main interest until then, now I focused on motorbikes. My intellectual life has always been diverse. Svalbard did not have an airport until 1975, so the trips to and from our summer holidays on the mainland until then were on boats, usually cargo boats transporting coal from the mines around Longyearbyen. I remember getting horribly seasick. Growing up in Longyearbyen was safe, even the threat of polar bears was not too worrying, as they had been hunted until 1973. I was never introduced to drugs in my school years, it hardly existed at all. Svalbard has no native population, the only reason people went there, was to work. Svalbard is a tax-free area, with very low income taxes. A young man could save enough money to build a house in his home town, by working in the coal mines a couple of years. No native population also means no criminals, no drug addicts and no people living off welfare. A perfect society, but for the cold climate. Growing up in such a remote place is probably what caused my interest in travel, i remember feeling as a teenager that I was far away from the action. And it is sort of off-Broadway, isn't it?
