2015 Dec by Michael Novins
Okinawa Prefecture -- In December 2015 I visited Naha, the capital city of Okinawa, where it was very easy to get around the city on the Okinawa Urban Monorail. From the airport, I took the monorail to visit Shuri Castle, a reconstructed Ryūkyūan gusuku (or stone-walled fortress) that has been inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. I ate at Makishi Market, where visitors can purchase seafood from the ground floor market stalls, which could be cooked and served at an upstairs restaurant. I purchased an unusual giant sea snail, which proved tough and tasteless.

2006 Dec by Veikko Huhtala*

2006 we spent our Christmas in Okinawa. Eight of December we had flight from Tokyo. Between 10-12 December we visited to Daito Islands by RAC Airlines. 13.12 we flew to Taipei by China Airlines. After travelled ten days around China we flew back to Okinawa 24.12. It was Christmas Eve and we went out to restaurant to have our Christmas dinner. Okinawa is the largest of Ryukyu Islands. We stayed all time in the capital city Naha. It is nice tourist destination, but not too large to stay. The main sight in Naha is Shuri Castle. It has been as UNESCO World Heritage Site since of 2008. On Christmas Day was our flight to Nagoya and from there back to Finland.

Ryukyu archipelago

The cheapest and most fantastic way to go from Japan to Taiwan is by boat, through the route: Tokyo - Naha (in Okinawa) - Ishigaki - Iriomote - Keelung (in Taiwan).
I stopped for a week in Naha and visited Itoman caves, in the south.
The shipping company was called Arimura Line, and life on board was amusing talking with friendly Japanese. In the nights I was given just a pillow and a blanket and slept on deck.
Until the beginning of the XVII century Okinawa archipelago belonged to China, and then the Japanese invaded it and called Nansei-Shoto. There is still a military US base in the north of Okinawa.
