The minibus took the whole day to reach Aizwal through endless bamboo jungles and hanging bridges. Most of Mizoram is mountainous.Aizawl is a lovely town living in vertical; there are no rickshaws because of the hills, but taxis charge 50 rupees for ride. People lived in a sort of palafitos, with half of the house built in the hill land plus the rest protracted with long wooden pillars. During the night the many hills of Aizawl looked as illuminated Christmas trees. What I heard about the customs and history of the peaceful Mizo people caused me admiration. I spent two nights in Aizwal. Next day, during the exit to Assam, I saw a training camp for guerrillas in the jungle where there were Israelis and Cubans. | |

While staying in Silchar in southern Assam, we took taxi to Aizawl, capital of Mizoram. Mizoram is one of the India States where you need a special permit. We got our permit from Indian Embassy in Helsinki. Mizoram is located between Bangladesh and Myanmar and it is the southernmost of the NE states. Distance from Silchar to Aizawl is about 200 km and it took all day to visit there. The road is little bit mountainous and the speed is limited. Taxi was not very expensive. If I remember, driver took approximately 50 euros about this trip. But 50 euros is a big amount money in India of course. |
