July 2016 -- I stayed at Taloa Heights, which is well located in the center of Alofi (http://taloaheightsniue.nu), a short walk from the island's two best restaurants, Kaiika, which serves fresh sushi (unlike sushi in New York, all of which must be frozen before serving) (http://kaiika.com), and Gills Indian Restaurant. My favorite activity was snorkeling at Snake Gully near Avatele Beach, where it was easy to approach highly venomous katuali (or flat-tail sea snakes). I arranged my snorkeling trip with Buccaneer Adventures Niue Dive (http://www.dive.nu). I also hiked several of the island's sea tracks, including those to Togo chasm, Anapala fresh water pool, Matapa chasm and Talava arches.

Wild island is like the old navigators used to name Niue owing to the natives being very aggresive towards foreigners. The plane is weekly, so you have to spend there a minimum of seven days. The plane only stops during 45 minuts, so no time even to take a picture to the airport since you will not be allowed to leave it. I hired a hostel, which was very cheap. It was called Bella Guesthouse. The owner had italian origins and made a very special price. In fact I paid less than a bed in a dormitory in Auckland, and she supplied me coffee, milk, tea, and some other products. Beers are cheap for foreigners, cheaper than in New Zealand, but you have to show your ticket out of Niue. The market is lovely and musicians always play. I bought taro that I cooked in Bella Guesthouse. Some foreigners live in Niue, a Japanese in a restaurant, a Isaraeli selling fish and icecreams, some kiwis... and all were very interested in meeting foreigners, so it was easy to make friends with them and drink beers together. I walked around the island, it took me two days. The perimeter makes about 65 kilometers. But the island is practically flat. Some times people stopped their cars offering me a ride, but I said that I wanted to cross the island on foot and refused the ride. Then they offered me cold drinks, which I accepted.

In Western Samoa we booked our return flight to Niue. We rented small moped and drove around the island. New Zealandese hotel was good, but a little bit too expensive. 3 days was quite enough, because the island is very small. But again: Good experience. |
