We departed Botswana in a shared kombi to Mafikeng near the border. There isn\'t much to see in Mafikeng but we did spend one night at the wonderful Buffalo Lodge, there are many lodges along the main highway into the city. This is a very busy city but there is really nothing to do except go to the museum which was closed on the day we arrived. The next morning we departed by shared kombi and made transfers in Vryberg and Taung, in both cities we were bored waiting around for many hours before the kombi was filled with passengers. We finally made it to Kimberley in Northern Cape by sunset.

August 2013 -- I visited Vredefort Dome, the largest verified impact crater to have existed on Earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Pilanesberg Game Reserve.

The former homeland of Bophuthatswana still got the casino resort of Sun City, where the rich still play as in the past.

I lived in the North West Province for 4 years (1996-1999) while studying at Potchefstroom university. It obviously has fond memories for me, as student years are generally the most carefree and fun in a person's life. From a tourist point of view it is not the most exciting of the South African provinces, but there are still a few interesting places to see. The world famous Sun City and Lost valley resort, the Magaliesberg, Pilanesberg Game Reserve and of course this province is the access point to Botswana. You should also visit the Vredefort Dome (near Potchefstroom) where an ancient meteorite hit the earth millions of years ago. The area is a World Heritage Site. The other world famous tourist attraction is the site of hte The Taung Skull: the Taung Skull was found in a quarry in 1924 by Dr Raymond Dart and indicated to the world that indeed the man initiated on the African continent.

BOPHUTHASWANA------------------------------While I was in Johannesburg, I bought in the bus station an excursion to Sun City for several rands, and was given the same amount of money in tokens for the casino. When I arrived to Sun City I exchanged my tokens for money and the visit was for free (I do not like playing in the casinos).I could enter the hotel nearby without being noticed and was surprised to see a luxurious 5 stars hotel with motives reminding me films of Indiana Jones. At the reception there was an enormous statue of an elephant, and the lamps were incredible stunning. I felt like living in a tale of Scheherazade.I returned to Johannesburg early next morning.

I was come to South Africa from St. Helena and arrived to Sun City by rented car. At that time Sun City was part of Bophuthatswana. I sent many postcards to my friends by Bophuthatswana stamps. Today you can not do that, because there is not Bophuthatswana anymore. Sun City was nice place and I stayed there over night. Capital Mahikeng is located near Botswana border and there are living about 50,000 people. If you do not want to rent car, the best way to travel will be bus. But if you have not time, it is better to fly (and pay more)I am always travelling as cheap as possible.
