We flew by Cape Air from San Juan. We just had one way tickets, because we didn’t exactly knew our route which we were travelling. St. Croix was a new location for both of us. When we arrived early in the morning there was very heavy rain in the island. We thought what to do, stay or proceed our trip to somewhere else. The latter alternative was better (our both opinion) and we bought one way tickets to Sint Maarten. So, our visit in St. Croix was very short, and perhaps we will go there second time later on when we have more time.

In Puerto Rico I bought a very cheap ticket by seaplane to Christiansted, in St. Croix Island. It was the first time that I traveled in a seaplane and I was excited, admiring the Virgin Islands from my window. In 1917 Denmark was forced by the United States to sell St. Croix. In the past that island belonged to the local people, then to Spain, to Great Britain, France, the Order of Malta, Denmark, and presently to USA. You could see the flags of all those countries (except the local Indians’) in the airport. I would stay three days with two nights in that island. The first day was spent totally in Christiansted and I visited the warehouse where the Danish kept the slaves that they captured in Africa, also the old Danish fortress (today is a museum) and in general the downtown with its pretty houses. I started to walk in direction to the airport, which was located far away from Christiansted. Walking is the best way to get to know a country. I walked about three hours until somebody, without hitch hiking, stopped his car and offered me a ride, to the airport, but first he offered me a beer in a cafeteria on the road. I accepted both offers. My flight was early in the morning the next day, so I spent the night in the benches of the airport. The third day I flew to St. Marteen.

October 2007 -- I visited on a day trip from St. Thomas, traveling to St. Croix on the ferry and back on Seabourne Airlines (http://www.seaborneairlines.com/flights/air-sea.php). From the ferry terminal, I walked to Christiansted and visited the Christiansted National Historic Site (http://www.nps.gov/chri/). |
