July 2014: I drove through the majority of Iowa making visits to Winterset (visiting the childhood home of John Wayne) and the capital of Des Moines (which is the most impressive capitol building I have seen, especially the interior library quarters).

Iowa's capital Des Moines is situated almost in the middle of state, in fout highways intersection. These highways are leading to Minneapolis in north, to Chicago in east, to Kansas City in south and to Omaha and Denver in west. We were traveling to Des Moines from Omaha, which is a largest city in Nebraska state. Des Moines is a little bit smaller by population than Omaha, about 0,2 million inhabitants in the center part of it. Iowa is not mountainous state at all, highest point is only about 500 metres high. All big mounts are very far, about 1000 kilometres away, Appalachian Mountains in the east and Rocky Mountains in the west. Iowa is situated between two big rivers, Mississippi in the east border and Missouri in the west border. In Des Moines we stayed only few hours before proceeding to Chicago by next Greyhound bus.

I have visited Iowa twice, first in August 1989 when I visited Davenport. In 2003, I made a business trip to Des Moines when I ate at 801 Steak and Chop House (which, according to the New York Times, is the "place to be seen" during the weeks preceding the Iowa caucases).

The first time that I crossed the whole state of Iowa, from west to east was in 1983, when I took a Greyhound bus from San Francisco to New York, and I stopped half a day in Los Moines. I only remember having seen some houses in the downtown, but I did not go to any museum or entered any cathedral. Then, almost one year later, in May 1984, I crossed Iowa State from east to West, this time slowly, making stops in Iowa City, again in Les Moines, and next day I ytaveled to Omaha, in Nebraska. I was heading to Canada with the intention to reach Inuvik, in Yukon. I remember that springtime was too cold in Iowa and those states in the north. It was snowing. During my stops in some Iowa cities I was not worried about visiting tourist attractions, but to get food and drink hot coffee. |
